VOLT Hockey Canada

Variety Ontario is proud to present VOLT Hockey. This exciting accessible sport is the ultimate team opportunity for children with a disability.

Variety – the Children’s Charity of Ontario is working with its partner chapters across Canada to build a Canadian VOLT Hockey League. VOLT Hockey is played by over 50 teams in Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the United States, and now in Canada.

VOLT Hockey is an inclusive and adaptive form of hockey, specifically designed for individuals of varied abilities. This unique sport is played in specially designed chairs, providing an accessible platform for children who may not have had the chance to engage in team sports before. For many of these children, it is their first opportunity to learn valuable life skills such as team building, competition and social inclusion. These types of opportunities are critical, given that 52% of children with a disability report they have no friends.

8 years of VOLT Hockey in Canada

In 2016, Variety – the Children’s Charity launched VOLT Hockey Canada at Variety Village in Toronto, thanks to help from donors and sponsors. During the week of March break that year, the Toronto Maple Leaf players Brad Boyes, Byron Froese and James Van Riemsdyk came by to meet the kids and play a friendly game of 3 on 3. Within the year, the first Canadian VOLT Hockey team was officially launched.

There are currently 6 Ontario teams in Toronto, London, Niagara, Brampton, Peterborough and Barrie. The league is also growing nationally with three Alberta teams, one in Edmonton, Fort McMurray and Calgary.
