The world of adaptive sports is where inclusivity meets a love of sport, and Variety – The Children’s Charity of Ontario (Variety) has been making waves with its groundbreaking VOLT Hockey program. Designed to be accessible to children and youths of all abilities, this initiative has not only transformed lives but also paved the way for Ontario’s VOLT Hockey players to showcase their skills on the international stage at the 2023 VOLT Hockey World Cup in Sweden.

The Impact of VOLT Hockey

VOLT Hockey uses a specialized electric chair controlled by a joystick, allowing anyone to engage in team play. This adaptive approach has opened a world of possibilities for young athletes who may have otherwise been excluded from traditional sports.

Variety recognized the potential of VOLT Hockey to inspire and empower young people of all abilities, and the VOLT Hockey Canada program has proven to be a real game-changer for participants since its launch in 2016. Beyond the physical benefits of engaging in a dynamic and challenging sport, players have experienced a boost in self-confidence, enhanced social skills, and a profound sense of achievement. The program emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal growth, instilling valuable life skills in its players.

Journey to the 2023 World Cup

Last year, Variety was thrilled to facilitate VOLT Hockey Canada’s first appearance at the 2022 Sweden VOLT Hockey World Cup, where Team Canada brought home the Silver in their first year competing.

This year brought even more excitement, as both Team Alberta and Team Ontario participated in the 2023 VOLT Hockey World Cup. The event brought together 200 players and 24 teams from across the world, showcasing the athleticism of players of all abilities and promoting the spirit of competition on an international scale.

The success of Team Ontario was not only a testament to the players’ dedication and skill, but also highlights the importance of creating avenues for adaptive sports on a global stage. 10 Canadian youths have now been able to attend and represent Canada at the World Cup, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Congratulations to all who competed!
